FAQs – Hygiene Services

How often should I see the hygienist?

Visiting the hygienist helps reduce your risk of developing gum disease and supports the treatment of existing gum problems. We tailor our recommendations to your personal needs. For most patients, we suggest visits every six months to maintain healthy gums, but if you’re at higher risk, we may recommend appointments every three months.

Is hygiene treatment painful?

Hygienist treatment is not usually painful. It involves an ultrasonic device that gently vibrates and uses a stream of water to remove plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth. Most patients find this comfortable, but if you have active gum disease, you may experience some mild discomfort. If needed, we can use numbing gel or local anaesthetic to ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.

Will hygiene visits whiten my teeth?

Hygiene visits include a professional polish that removes surface staining, helping your teeth look cleaner, brighter and shinier after treatment. However, this does not change the natural shade of your teeth. If you’re looking to noticeably whiten your teeth, we recommend professional teeth whitening, which we also offer at the practice.
